The City Celebrates Independence Day With More Than 100 Events

Boston might be a historic city, but no one will accuse its Fourth of July celebration of being old school. Prepare to be wowed this year as Conventures, Inc produces the 38th annual Boston Harborfest with more than 100 family-friendly events like live music, seafood tastings, and an art festival with partners including the Paul Revere House, Old North Church, and the USS Constitution from July 1 through 4.

“Harborfest, one of the biggest Fourth of July celebrations in the country, is a city-wide family-oriented event that entertains and educates visitors on Boston’s maritime history and heritage, and its leading role in the founding of our country,” says Pat Moscaritolo, president and CEO of the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It’s always so inspiring to see grandparents with their kids and grandkids together as a family enjoying the many Harborfest activities over the four-day-long celebration.” As part of Harborfest, the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, which sits over the same body of water where the original tea party took place, will host games, sing-alongs, and yes, even some tea crate throwing, on July 1, 2, and 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“Boston offers one of the largest and most festive Fourth of July celebrations in the country and is a terrific place to celebrate the foundation of our great nation,” says Shawn P. Ford, executive director of the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. “Visitors can actually walk the same streets and visit many of the original buildings as the Patriots did more than 240 years ago.”

Arrive early on the Fourth of July to secure your spot at the Hatch Memorial Shell overlooking the Charles River for the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, a patriotic concert at 8:30 p.m. by the Boston Pops Orchestra, led by maestro Keith Lockhart. If you can’t get into the concert area, stake out a space in the Esplanade park or even on nearby Massachusetts Avenue bridge for the firework extravaganza beginning at 10:30 p.m. that is set off from the River during the Pops’ rendition of the 1812 Overture.
